Draft Grade — Cardinals
Overall
C
ValueB
NeedB-
TradesF
FutureB-
The Cardinals bled value on every deal, hence the C. Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Cardinals spent slot 257 on X'Zauvea Gadlin, a name the board had a full 65 spots lower.
Getting Lassiter where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.
It is not that Lassiter is a bad player; it is that the Cardinals had louder needs to answer first. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
If JC Latham and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick29
Rnd1
JC Latham
JC Latham slid further than he should have, and the 29th overall pick is lovely value for the offensive lineman. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick32
Rnd1
Troy Fautanu
In pick No. 32 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick35
Rnd2
Darius Robinson
Darius Robinson at No. 35 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick50
Rnd2
Terrion Arnold
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Terrion Arnold in pick 50, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick53
Rnd2
Braden Fiske
No edge and no loss on Braden Fiske in slot 53; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
Pick54
Rnd2
Xavier Worthy
Xavier Worthy in the 54th pick is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick65
Rnd3
Ricky Pearsall
Nothing to complain about; Ricky Pearsall went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick66
Rnd3
Payton Wilson
They barely believed it either: Payton Wilson still on the board at the Round 3 slot. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick69
Rnd3
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at the 69th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick71
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
No drama and no debate, Sedrick Van Pran went about where he belonged in slot 71. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick85
Rnd3
Kris Jenkins
Steal is underselling it; Kris Jenkins at pick 85 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick88
Rnd3
Kamari Lassiter
A surprising call. With quarterback still to address, they spent pick No. 88 on Kamari Lassiter, a cornerback they were not short of.
Pick90
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
They went early on Christian Mahogany in the 90th pick, and the value did not follow. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick91
Rnd3
Isaac Guerendo
They reached a country mile for Isaac Guerendo at Round 3, Pick 28, and the board is aghast. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick105
Rnd4
Marshawn Kneeland
A slide stopped in the 105th pick, with Marshawn Kneeland worth more than the price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick106
Rnd4
Mekhi Wingo
They paid sticker price for Mekhi Wingo in pick No. 106, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick122
Rnd4
Cade Stover
Cade Stover at slot 122 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick127
Rnd4
Cole Bishop
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback to take Cole Bishop, a safety that was not the priority.
Pick133
Rnd4
Chau Smith-Wade
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the Round 4 slot on Chau Smith-Wade with quarterback unsolved.
Pick135
Rnd4
Tyrone Tracy Jr.
A tidy bit of business in Round 4, Pick 35, where Tyrone Tracy Jr. graded well above the range. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick137
Rnd5
Grayson Murphy
They left a pile of value on the table to take Grayson Murphy this early at the 137th overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick139
Rnd5
Trevor Keegan
Value said wait; Trevor Keegan in No. 139 says they were not listening. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick144
Rnd5
Justin Eboigbe
A straight-up fair deal on Justin Eboigbe at pick No. 144, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick155
Rnd5
Javion Cohen
A reach on Javion Cohen in Round 5, Pick 19; the board had better options right there. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick157
Rnd5
Khristian Boyd
Khristian Boyd in the Round 5 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick161
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
They took Luke McCaffrey at par in pick 161, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick168
Rnd5
Jalyx Hunt
Jalyx Hunt at slot 168 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster logic is harder to follow.
Pick186
Rnd6
Delmar Glaze
A clean, defensible pick in the 186th overall pick with a little surplus value in Delmar Glaze. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick188
Rnd6
Gabe Hall
Gabe Hall at No. 188 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick189
Rnd6
Steele Chambers
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Steele Chambers. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick204
Rnd6
Anthony Gould
The board fumbled Anthony Gould all the way to the 204th overall pick, and they scooped it up. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick216
Rnd6
JD Bertrand
JD Bertrand in No. 216 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick222
Rnd7
Tahj Washington
Taking Tahj Washington in the Round 7 slot is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick224
Rnd7
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint at the 224th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick235
Rnd7
Erick All
Circle this one: Erick All at pick No. 235 is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick237
Rnd7
Tyrice Knight
A linebacker of that caliber at slot 237 is the definition of value, full stop. The roster fit checks out.
Pick239
Rnd7
Edefuan Ulofoshio
They paid up for Edefuan Ulofoshio at Round 7, Pick 19 when waiting would have done the job. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick240
Rnd7
Kimani Vidal
Kimani Vidal in pick 240 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick241
Rnd7
Myles Cole
Somehow Myles Cole was still sitting there in pick 241, and they pounced on premier edge rusher value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick243
Rnd7
Josh Proctor
Josh Proctor in slot 243 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick247
Rnd7
Tanner McLachlan
They will replay Tanner McLachlan at Round 7, Pick 27 for years; that is how good the value is. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick251
Rnd7
Brevyn Spann-Ford
Nice patience on Brevyn Spann-Ford, who had no business lasting to No. 251. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick252
Rnd7
Michael Barrett
You do not let a linebacker like Michael Barrett reach pick No. 252 and blink. They did not. It fills a real need, too.
Pick253
Rnd7
Javontae Jean-Baptiste
Javontae Jean-Baptiste at the 253rd pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick254
Rnd7
Decamerion Richardson
This one needs a full-page explanation: Decamerion Richardson in the Round 7 slot, miles early. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick257
Rnd7
X'Zauvea Gadlin
A wild overpay on X'Zauvea Gadlin in the 257th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
