Draft Grade — Bears
Overall C+
ValueC+ NeedB- TradesA+ FutureF
The Bears left with their quarterback, and a C+ to match.

There is reaching, and then there is John Emery Jr. at the 257th overall pick. The Bears jumped the board by 146 and dared it to prove them wrong. A mixed bag that lands at C+.

The whole projection now runs through Caleb Williams; hit there and everything else looks smarter. The phones were where this weekend was really won.

The Johnson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. It is not that Sinnott is a bad player; it is that the Bears had louder needs to answer first.

They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.

In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.

Pick Analysis
Pick2 Rnd1 Caleb Williams
In Round 1, Pick 2 they get the arm they will build around at fair value.
Pick8 Rnd1 Brock Bowers
In slot 8 they get a matchup weapon at tight end at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick17 Rnd1 Rome Odunze
In pick 17 they get a difference-maker at receiver. A real need, handled.
Pick20 Rnd1 Ladd McConkey
In No. 20 they get a home-run threat at receiver, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick40 Rnd2 Brenden Rice
A real head-scratcher, Brenden Rice in the 40th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick74 Rnd3 Cooper Beebe
No drama and no debate, Cooper Beebe went about where he belonged in the 74th overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick75 Rnd3 Dominick Puni
They reached into another round for Dominick Puni, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick96 Rnd3 Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey at pick 96 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick101 Rnd4 Ben Sinnott
Of all the spots to shop, they chose tight end. Ben Sinnott in slot 101 leaves edge rusher and interior defensive lineman for later.
Pick110 Rnd4 DJ James
No edge and no loss on DJ James in Round 4, Pick 10; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick111 Rnd4 Drake Nugent
Value said wait; Drake Nugent in the Round 4 slot says they were not listening. The roster fit checks out.
Pick112 Rnd4 Tommy Eichenberg
They went early on Tommy Eichenberg in pick No. 112, and the value did not follow. It fills a real need, too.
Pick123 Rnd4 Ty'Ron Hopper
A wild overpay on Ty'Ron Hopper in the 123rd pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick143 Rnd5 Dillon Johnson
They will replay Dillon Johnson at No. 143 for years; that is how good the value is. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick161 Rnd5 Dadrion Taylor-Demerson
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson in pick No. 161 is fair value, right on his grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick253 Rnd7 Ryan Watts
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Ryan Watts in pick 253, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick254 Rnd7 Anim Dankwah
A slide stopped in Round 7, Pick 34, with Anim Dankwah worth more than the price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick257 Rnd7 John Emery Jr.
John Emery Jr. in the 257th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
