Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall

FutureB-
A weekend that raised as many questions as it answered. The Steelers get a C+. The Steelers bet big and early on Devin Leary, 46 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.
The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Spending an early pick on DT-EDGE with interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Jackson Powers-Johnson
In the 27th pick they get protection for the quarterback, a steep price for the projection. More want than need.
Pick52
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
A straight-up fair deal on Edgerrin Cooper at pick No. 52, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick84
Rnd3
Maason Smith
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE and leaves interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots untouched.
Pick90
Rnd3
Jarvis Brownlee Jr.
Jarvis Brownlee Jr. at the Round 3 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick105
Rnd4
Ainias Smith
Ainias Smith at Round 4, Pick 5 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick120
Rnd4
Javon Foster
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots still to address, they spent the 120th overall pick on Javon Foster, an offensive lineman they were not short of.
Pick121
Rnd4
James Williams
A premium they did not need to pay, James Williams a notch or two before his time. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick198
Rnd6
Josh Proctor
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Josh Proctor. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick238
Rnd7
Devin Leary
Devin Leary at Round 7, Pick 18 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
