Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B-
ValueC+ NeedB TradesA+ FutureF
Nobody dealt better than the Texans this weekend: B-.

The rest of the league had time to spare on Julius Welschof; the Texans did not wait, grabbing him 82 spots ahead at the 247th overall pick.

The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

Landing Watson that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.

Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Kamari Lassiter
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a press-man option on the boundary. More want than need.
Pick24 Rnd1 Byron Murphy II
In pick No. 24 they get a run-stuffing presence up front, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick33 Rnd2 Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette at No. 33 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick56 Rnd2 Edgerrin Cooper
A straight-up fair deal on Edgerrin Cooper at slot 56, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
Pick58 Rnd2 Patrick Paul
Value with a capital V on Patrick Paul in the 58th pick, a genuine coup. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick90 Rnd3 Marist Liufau
Marist Liufau at the Round 3 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick123 Rnd4 Malik Mustapha
Malik Mustapha at the Round 4 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick126 Rnd4 Braelon Allen
They reached into another round for Braelon Allen, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick163 Rnd5 Jared Wiley
Value said wait; Jared Wiley in the 163rd pick says they were not listening. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick239 Rnd7 Blake Watson
Taking Blake Watson in the 239th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick247 Rnd7 Julius Welschof
They talked themselves into Julius Welschof at slot 247, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
