Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall D-
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The Cowboys found their guy under center in Ward: D-.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The Cowboys took Barryn Sorrell a full 87 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. Hard to defend, and the D- reflects that.

The whole projection now runs through Cam Ward; hit there and everything else looks smarter. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.

With cornerback and tight end unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. On value alone, Gordon II makes the weekend a net positive.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through cornerback.

The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Cam Ward
In the 12th overall pick they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick30 Rnd1 Josh Conerly Jr.
In pick No. 30 they get a cornerstone up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick56 Rnd2 Donovan Jackson
They left a pile of value on the table to take Donovan Jackson this early at the 56th pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick58 Rnd2 Jihaad Campbell
They read the board right and Jihaad Campbell was the payoff at No. 58. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick63 Rnd2 Xavier Restrepo
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Xavier Restrepo. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick66 Rnd3 Omarr Norman-Lott
By-the-book stuff, Omarr Norman-Lott at pick 66 squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Pick76 Rnd3 Dylan Sampson
Value with a capital V on Dylan Sampson in pick 76, a genuine coup. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick81 Rnd3 Savion Williams
Savion Williams at pick No. 81 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick83 Rnd3 Kevin Winston Jr.
They paid up for Kevin Winston Jr. at Round 3, Pick 19 when waiting would have done the job. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick127 Rnd4 Andrew Mukuba
A surprising call. With cornerback and tight end still to address, they spent the Round 4 slot on Andrew Mukuba, a safety they were not short of.
Pick150 Rnd5 Ajani Cornelius
Ajani Cornelius at the 150th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick167 Rnd5 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
A straight-up fair deal on Dont'e Thornton Jr. at slot 167, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick170 Rnd5 Damien Martinez
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Damien Martinez in the 170th overall pick, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick172 Rnd5 Nazir Stackhouse
Nazir Stackhouse at No. 172 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick174 Rnd5 Jack Kiser
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jack Kiser well ahead of where he belonged. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick211 Rnd6 Ollie Gordon II
Taking Ollie Gordon II in the Round 6 slot is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick227 Rnd7 Barryn Sorrell
Barryn Sorrell at Round 7, Pick 9 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick249 Rnd7 Brady Cook
This one needs a full-page explanation: Brady Cook in slot 249, miles early. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
