Quarterback settled, Mendoza in the fold, and a B- for the Raiders. Start where it matters. The Raiders took Fernando Mendoza to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
They will need Heidenreich to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
They will answer for taking safety early while edge rusher and tight end went begging. Getting Haulcy where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In the Round 1 slot they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
Chris Johnson
Chris Johnson at pick 36 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick67
Rnd3
A.J. Haulcy
A.J. Haulcy in the 67th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick102
Rnd4
Zakee Wheatley
A curious use of the 102nd pick. Edge rusher and tight end needed the pick; a safety in Zakee Wheatley did not.
Pick134
Rnd4
Chris McClellan
Chris McClellan at Round 4, Pick 34 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick170
Rnd5
Caleb Douglas
A clean, defensible pick in No. 170 with a little surplus value in Caleb Douglas. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick175
Rnd5
Taylen Green
Taylen Green at slot 175 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick185
Rnd6
Travis Burke
Nice patience on Travis Burke, who had no business lasting to pick No. 185. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick208
Rnd6
Kaelon Black
Kaelon Black in pick No. 208 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick219
Rnd7
Eli Heidenreich
A real head-scratcher, Eli Heidenreich in pick 219 is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
