Brierley1987 DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots

Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall

FutureB-
The Patriots turned the phones into found money: B+. The Patriots did not so much draft Drew Kendall as overpay for him, 73 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. Good, not great, and the B+ says as much.
The Bowman Jr. pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Adding Ja'Marr Chase by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Tetairoa McMillan
In pick 17 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick38
Rnd2
Jonah Savaiinaea
A conviction pick on Jonah Savaiinaea at slot 38 that the board grades a round light. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick69
Rnd3
Cameron Williams
By-the-book stuff, Cameron Williams at No. 69 squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick77
Rnd3
Mason Taylor
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Mason Taylor. The roster fit checks out.
Pick106
Rnd4
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo in the 106th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick144
Rnd5
Billy Bowman Jr.
A safety of that caliber at the Round 5 slot is the definition of value, full stop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick217
Rnd7
R.J. Mickens
R.J. Mickens in the 217th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick220
Rnd7
Drew Kendall
A wild overpay on Drew Kendall in pick No. 220, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick238
Rnd7
Phil Mafah
Phil Mafah slipping to the Round 7 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
