The Steelers kept it disciplined and banked a B+. Thirty-one other rooms let Will Howard slide, and the Steelers were the ones holding the card at the Round 4 slot. Highway robbery. It nets out to a B+, which feels about right.
Nelson has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
They went 5 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick Analysis
Pick39
Rnd2
Kenneth Grant
Kenneth Grant at the 39th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick68
Rnd3
Kaleb Johnson
A running back of that caliber at Round 3, Pick 4 is the definition of value, full stop. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick86
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
They paid sticker price for Andrew Mukuba in pick No. 86, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick108
Rnd4
Savion Williams
A tidy bit of business in the Round 4 slot, where Savion Williams graded well above the range. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick123
Rnd4
Will Howard
Will Howard in slot 123 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick125
Rnd4
Joshua Farmer
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Joshua Farmer at pick 125. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick156
Rnd5
Jack Nelson
Jack Nelson in No. 156 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick185
Rnd6
Caleb Rogers
Caleb Rogers at the 185th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick229
Rnd7
R.J. Mickens
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing R.J. Mickens in the 229th overall pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
