Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall C
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureC+
The 49ers lost the trade table, and the C tells the story.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The 49ers took Will Sheppard a full 99 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C.

Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Gordon II. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.

The Fitzgerald pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at tight end.

If Will Johnson and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick Analysis
Pick11 Rnd1 Will Johnson
In the 11th pick they get a sticky cover corner. More want than need.
Pick43 Rnd2 Jonah Savaiinaea
No edge and no loss on Jonah Savaiinaea in the 43rd overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick71 Rnd3 Donovan Jackson
The board had cheaper options than Donovan Jackson at No. 71, and it noticed. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick75 Rnd3 Jared Ivey
They took Jared Ivey at par in Round 3, Pick 11, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick99 Rnd3 Chris Paul Jr.
Chris Paul Jr. slid further than he should have, and pick 99 is lovely value for the linebacker. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick112 Rnd4 Jordan Phillips
By-the-book stuff, Jordan Phillips at pick No. 112 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick138 Rnd4 Ryan Fitzgerald
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Ryan Fitzgerald at specialist with tight end open.
Pick139 Rnd4 Dillon Gabriel
A reasonable price with a little left over, Dillon Gabriel in the 139th pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick189 Rnd6 Joshua Gray
Joshua Gray in pick 189 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick228 Rnd7 Roc Taylor
They robbed the room for Roc Taylor here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick232 Rnd7 Ollie Gordon II
Ollie Gordon II at pick No. 232 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick243 Rnd7 Ty Hamilton
Ty Hamilton at the 243rd overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick255 Rnd7 Will Sheppard
They left a pile of value on the table to take Will Sheppard this early at Round 7, Pick 37. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
