Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B-

More right than wrong for the 49ers, and a B- to prove it.

The Eugene Asante selection is the head-turner. The 49ers reached 205 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. No fireworks, but a solid B-.

Jackson falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. Quantity was the play, for better or worse.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick Analysis
Pick22 Rnd1 Walter Nolen
In pick No. 22 they get a wrecking ball inside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick43 Rnd2 Omarion Hampton
They read the board right and Omarion Hampton was the payoff at the 43rd pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick56 Rnd2 Azareye'h Thomas
Azareye'h Thomas in pick 56 is fair value, right on his grade. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick75 Rnd3 Bradyn Swinson
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Bradyn Swinson at slot 75. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick100 Rnd3 Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson in the 100th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick109 Rnd4 Jared Wilson
Jared Wilson at the Round 4 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick113 Rnd4 Sai'vion Jones
They left a pile of value on the table to take Sai'vion Jones this early at Round 4, Pick 11. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick128 Rnd4 Lathan Ransom
Taking Lathan Ransom in pick No. 128 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick138 Rnd4 Pat Bryant
A reach on Pat Bryant in the 138th pick; the board had better options right there. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick147 Rnd5 Kyle Williams
Kyle Williams in slot 147 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick160 Rnd5 JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues at No. 160 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick199 Rnd6 Jaylin Smith
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jaylin Smith. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick205 Rnd6 Jamon Dumas-Johnson
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jamon Dumas-Johnson well ahead of where he belonged. The roster fit checks out.
Pick227 Rnd7 Eugene Asante
A wild overpay on Eugene Asante in the Round 7 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick249 Rnd7 Jalen Rivers
They reached a country mile for Jalen Rivers at pick 249, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick252 Rnd7 Jalin Conyers
Jalin Conyers in No. 252 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
