Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedA-
TradesB-
FutureB-
More right than wrong for the 49ers, and a B- to prove it. There is reaching, and then there is Jamon Dumas-Johnson at pick No. 160. The 49ers jumped the board by 71 and dared it to prove them wrong.
Getting Phillips where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Offensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Armand Membou
In the 11th overall pick they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick43
Rnd2
Derrick Harmon
Derrick Harmon slid further than he should have, and No. 43 is lovely value for the interior defensive lineman. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick75
Rnd3
Jack Bech
They did well to land Jack Bech in pick 75, just ahead of his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick100
Rnd3
Oluwafemi Oladejo
Oluwafemi Oladejo at pick No. 100 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick113
Rnd4
Anthony Belton
Anthony Belton in the Round 4 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick138
Rnd4
Jordan Phillips
Jordan Phillips in the 138th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick147
Rnd5
Cobee Bryant
Cobee Bryant at pick No. 147 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick160
Rnd5
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
They reached a country mile for Jamon Dumas-Johnson at pick 160, and the board is aghast. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick227
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
Isaac TeSlaa in the 227th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick249
Rnd7
Torricelli Simpkins III
Torricelli Simpkins III at No. 249 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick252
Rnd7
Marcus Yarns
Marcus Yarns in the Round 7 slot is fair value, right on his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
