FutureB-
The 49ers let Gordon II fall into their laps, and walked away with a B. You could see the war room lean forward. Ollie Gordon II at slot 249 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They will need Dennis-Sutton to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Will Johnson
In the 14th overall pick they get a sticky cover corner. Need was not the driver here.
Pick58
Rnd2
Marcus Mbow
No drama and no debate, Marcus Mbow went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick75
Rnd3
Alfred Collins
A quiet steal in Round 3, Pick 11: Alfred Collins for less than the market said. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick76
Rnd3
Dani Dennis-Sutton
This one needs a full-page explanation: Dani Dennis-Sutton in pick No. 76, miles early. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick80
Rnd3
Gunnar Helm
The board had Gunnar Helm higher than the 80th pick, and the tight end fell to them anyway. It fills a real need, too.
Pick91
Rnd3
Dylan Sampson
Dylan Sampson at slot 91 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick100
Rnd3
Jaxson Dart
Jaxson Dart in No. 100 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick112
Rnd4
Deontae Lawson
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Deontae Lawson in pick 112, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Pick135
Rnd4
Emery Jones Jr.
They reached a country mile for Emery Jones Jr. at pick No. 135, and the board is aghast. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick137
Rnd4
Lathan Ransom
Lathan Ransom in pick 137 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick168
Rnd5
Danny Stutsman
The board fumbled Danny Stutsman all the way to No. 168, and they scooped it up. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick174
Rnd5
Tez Johnson
Tez Johnson at the Round 5 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick186
Rnd6
Cam Skattebo
Steal is underselling it; Cam Skattebo at slot 186 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick226
Rnd7
Jared Wilson
A tidy bit of business in Round 7, Pick 10, where Jared Wilson graded well above the range. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick230
Rnd7
Joey Slackman
Joey Slackman at the 230th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick249
Rnd7
Ollie Gordon II
Ollie Gordon II in the 249th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick254
Rnd7
Jack Kiser
Somehow Jack Kiser was still sitting there in No. 254, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
