FutureA+
The 49ers bled value on every deal, hence the D. The tape said wait; the 49ers did not. Bryce Foster went at pick No. 102, a good 61 picks before the board was ready. A D that will need time and luck to look better.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They will answer for taking cornerback early while running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots went begging. The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Jonah Savaiinaea
By-the-book stuff, Jonah Savaiinaea at pick No. 31 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick37
Rnd2
Jabbar Muhammad
A slide stopped in pick 37, with Jabbar Muhammad worth more than the price. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick38
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
They paid sticker price for Tyler Booker in slot 38, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick66
Rnd3
Jordan Hancock
A surprising call. With running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots still to address, they spent the 66th overall pick on Jordan Hancock, a cornerback they were not short of.
Pick95
Rnd3
Xavier Restrepo
Xavier Restrepo in Round 3, Pick 31 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick101
Rnd4
Wyatt Milum
A straight-up fair deal on Wyatt Milum at the Round 4 slot, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick102
Rnd4
Bryce Foster
A wild overpay on Bryce Foster in slot 102, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick127
Rnd4
Nick Emmanwori
Nice patience on Nick Emmanwori, who had no business lasting to No. 127. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick159
Rnd5
Will Sheppard
The board had cheaper options than Will Sheppard at the 159th pick, and it noticed. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick191
Rnd6
Mason Taylor
No edge and no loss on Mason Taylor in pick 191; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick223
Rnd7
Jaylin Noel
Jaylin Noel in the 223rd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
