Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueC+ NeedB TradesA+ FutureB-
The 49ers fleeced the room on the phones and earned a B.

There was a run on nobody at that position, and the 49ers started one anyway for Sai'vion Jones, 83 picks ahead of schedule. No fireworks, but a solid B.

If one pick saves this weekend, it is Edwards. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.

The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Offensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick26 Rnd1 Walter Nolen
In pick No. 26 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick45 Rnd2 Kyle Kennard
A wild overpay on Kyle Kennard in the Round 2 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick55 Rnd2 Sai'vion Jones
This one needs a full-page explanation: Sai'vion Jones in Round 2, Pick 23, miles early. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick75 Rnd3 Demetrius Knight Jr.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Demetrius Knight Jr. in No. 75. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick90 Rnd3 Donovan Jackson
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Donovan Jackson at the 90th pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick101 Rnd3 Jared Wilson
By-the-book stuff, Jared Wilson at slot 101 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick103 Rnd4 Isaiah Bond
Isaiah Bond in Round 4, Pick 1 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick113 Rnd4 Charles Grant
You do not let an offensive lineman like Charles Grant reach the 113th overall pick and blink. They did not. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick117 Rnd4 Jacob Parrish
They paid up for Jacob Parrish at the Round 4 slot when waiting would have done the job. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick138 Rnd4 Cody Simon
They read the board right and Cody Simon was the payoff at slot 138. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick147 Rnd5 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at pick No. 147 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick160 Rnd5 Jeffrey Bassa
Taking Jeffrey Bassa in the 160th pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick227 Rnd7 Tonka Hemingway
Tonka Hemingway at No. 227 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick232 Rnd7 Oronde Gadsden II
Oronde Gadsden II in pick 232 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick249 Rnd7 Donovan Edwards
Donovan Edwards in No. 249 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick252 Rnd7 Jabbar Muhammad
They will replay Jabbar Muhammad at slot 252 for years; that is how good the value is. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
