Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall F
ValueC+ NeedB+ TradesF FutureD-
A weekend the 49ers spent ahead of the board, for worse: F.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The 49ers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.

The cost of the Curry reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.

In short, a weekend the front office will want to forget in a hurry.

Pick Analysis
Pick27 Rnd1 Emmanuel Pregnon
In slot 27 they get a cornerstone up front, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick28 Rnd1 Kayden McDonald
In pick 28 they get a run-stuffing presence up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick43 Rnd2 Anthony Hill Jr.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Anthony Hill Jr. in the 43rd pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick53 Rnd2 Germie Bernard
They took Germie Bernard at par in the 53rd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick75 Rnd3 Caden Curry
Caden Curry at the Round 3 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick76 Rnd3 Zakee Wheatley
Zakee Wheatley in pick No. 76 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick85 Rnd3 Jacob Rodriguez
A reach for Jacob Rodriguez in No. 85; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick87 Rnd3 Omar Cooper Jr.
Nothing to complain about; Omar Cooper Jr. went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick92 Rnd3 D'Angelo Ponds
They paid up for D'Angelo Ponds at pick No. 92 when waiting would have done the job. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick127 Rnd4 Logan Jones
By-the-book stuff, Logan Jones at pick 127 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick171 Rnd5 Trey Zuhn III
A big swing on Trey Zuhn III at Round 5, Pick 33, well ahead of any board in the building. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick172 Rnd5 Gracen Halton
No edge and no loss on Gracen Halton in the Round 5 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
