The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The 49ers watched Dillon Gabriel slide 102 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.

In slot 11 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.

Somehow Jalon Walker was still sitting there in the 43rd overall pick, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.

They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jalen Royals in No. 75. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.

Maxwell Hairston in pick 100 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.

Malachi Moore slid further than he should have, and the Round 4 slot is lovely value for the safety. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
