Draft Grade — Cardinals
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Cardinals, and a B- to prove it.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cardinals did exactly that with Carson Steele in pick 225.

Spending an early pick on cornerback with tight end and interior defensive lineman open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Joe Alt
In the 4th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick27 Rnd1 Chop Robinson
In pick No. 27 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick35 Rnd2 Ladd McConkey
A straight-up fair deal on Ladd McConkey at slot 35, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick66 Rnd3 D.J. James
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on D.J. James. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick71 Rnd3 Javon Bullard
Good price on Javon Bullard in the 71st overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick90 Rnd3 Roman Wilson
Roman Wilson in No. 90 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick104 Rnd4 DJ James
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 104th pick on DJ James with tight end and interior defensive lineman unsolved.
Pick133 Rnd4 Jordan Travis
They paid sticker price for Jordan Travis in Round 4, Pick 33, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick140 Rnd5 Cam Hart
Cam Hart at the Round 5 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick188 Rnd6 Aki Ogunbiyi
They took Aki Ogunbiyi at par in pick 188, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick225 Rnd7 Carson Steele
Carson Steele in slot 225 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The roster fit checks out.
Pick227 Rnd7 Steele Chambers
No drama and no debate, Steele Chambers went about where he belonged in No. 227. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
