Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall D-
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureC+
The Cowboys got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D-.

They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Blake Watson, 41 picks early at Round 7, Pick 27. Hard to defend, and the D- reflects that.

The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. The Jones pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.

The Cowboys paired the rookies with proven help, Jamaree Salyer leading the way.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick46 Rnd2 Cooper DeJean
Cooper DeJean at the Round 2 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick56 Rnd2 Ricky Pearsall
No drama and no debate, Ricky Pearsall went about where he belonged in pick No. 56. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick59 Rnd2 Zach Frazier
Zach Frazier in Round 2, Pick 27 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick69 Rnd3 Patrick Paul
They paid sticker price for Patrick Paul in the 69th pick, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick76 Rnd3 Ruke Orhorhoro
The board had Ruke Orhorhoro higher than pick 76, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. The roster fit checks out.
Pick87 Rnd3 Trey Benson
No edge and no loss on Trey Benson in slot 87; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick90 Rnd3 Max Melton
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Max Melton in No. 90. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick104 Rnd4 Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter at the 104th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick105 Rnd4 Maason Smith
They took Maason Smith at par in pick No. 105, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick127 Rnd4 Cedric Gray
They let Cedric Gray come to them and pounced at the 127th overall pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick128 Rnd4 Johnny Wilson
A tidy little value on Johnny Wilson in the Round 4 slot, a step better than break-even. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick131 Rnd4 Tommy Eichenberg
Tommy Eichenberg in Round 4, Pick 31 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick133 Rnd4 Brennan Jackson
They reached a country mile for Brennan Jackson at pick 133, and the board is aghast. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick138 Rnd5 Dylan Laube
A wild overpay on Dylan Laube in slot 138, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick144 Rnd5 Elijah Jones
Taking Elijah Jones in No. 144 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick145 Rnd5 Jared Wiley
They paid a round early for Jared Wiley in the 145th pick, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick146 Rnd5 Roger Rosengarten
Roger Rosengarten at the Round 5 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick174 Rnd5 Braiden McGregor
A straight-up fair deal on Braiden McGregor at the 174th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick176 Rnd6 Myles Cole
Myles Cole in Round 6, Pick 1 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick216 Rnd6 Caedan Wallace
A reasonable price with a little left over, Caedan Wallace in pick 216. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick233 Rnd7 Jordan Magee
A quiet steal in pick No. 233: Jordan Magee for less than the market said. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick244 Rnd7 Tyler Owens
The board had cheaper options than Tyler Owens at slot 244, and it noticed. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick247 Rnd7 Blake Watson
Blake Watson in Round 7, Pick 27 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick248 Rnd7 Bub Means
By-the-book stuff, Bub Means at pick 248 squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
