Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B+
ValueB+ NeedB TradesA+ FutureB-
Nobody dealt better than the Patriots this weekend: B+.

The Patriots put a flag in the ground for Jamaree Caldwell, 125 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit.

Landing Stutsman that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast.

Spending an early pick on linebacker with quarterback open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 Shavon Revel Jr.
In the Round 1 slot they get a sticky cover corner. Need was not the driver here.
Pick38 Rnd2 Nick Emmanwori
A safety of that caliber at the 38th pick is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick45 Rnd2 Colston Loveland
They robbed the room for Colston Loveland here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick51 Rnd2 Isaiah Bond
Isaiah Bond at Round 2, Pick 19 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick56 Rnd2 Jalon Walker
Circle this one: Jalon Walker at No. 56 is a fall that decides a draft. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick69 Rnd3 Donovan Ezeiruaku
No drama and no debate, Donovan Ezeiruaku went about where he belonged in the 69th overall pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick77 Rnd3 Xavier Watts
Xavier Watts in the Round 3 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick105 Rnd4 Demetrius Knight Jr.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Demetrius Knight Jr. in No. 105 leaves quarterback for later.
Pick128 Rnd4 Devin Neal
The board fumbled Devin Neal all the way to slot 128, and they scooped it up. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick131 Rnd4 Carson Schwesinger
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Carson Schwesinger adds a linebacker and leaves quarterback untouched.
Pick145 Rnd5 Cobee Bryant
They talked themselves into Cobee Bryant at pick No. 145, and the board did not agree. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick187 Rnd6 Lathan Ransom
Lathan Ransom at the 187th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick205 Rnd6 Danny Stutsman
Steal is underselling it; Danny Stutsman at pick 205 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick206 Rnd6 Jamaree Caldwell
Jamaree Caldwell at Round 6, Pick 28 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick219 Rnd7 Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo at slot 219 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick222 Rnd7 Luke Lachey
Luke Lachey in pick No. 222 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick234 Rnd7 Garrett Dellinger
A wild overpay on Garrett Dellinger in pick 234, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The roster fit checks out.
Pick240 Rnd7 Bru McCoy
Bru McCoy in the Round 7 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
