Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall C-
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The Cowboys won the night they stopped Leonard from sliding. Grade: C-.

The board owed the Cowboys one, and it paid up: Riley Leonard, the No. 103 name on the board, sitting there at No. 155 like a gift left on the doorstep. A mixed bag that lands at C-.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The cost of the Sturdivant reach is exactly the players who went right after him.

The Gillotte pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with tight end still on the board. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

It nets out as a middle-of-the-pack haul that neither helps nor hurts much.

Pick Analysis
Pick22 Rnd1 Emery Jones Jr.
Emery Jones Jr. in pick No. 22 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick45 Rnd2 James Pearce Jr.
James Pearce Jr. in the 45th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick76 Rnd3 Danny Stutsman
Danny Stutsman at No. 76 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick84 Rnd3 Ashton Gillotte
They bypassed pressing needs at tight end to take Ashton Gillotte, an edge rusher that was not the priority.
Pick87 Rnd3 Ja'Quinden Jackson
They liked Ja'Quinden Jackson enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 87. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick88 Rnd3 Tacario Davis
A conviction pick on Tacario Davis at the 88th pick that the board grades a round light. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick112 Rnd4 J.Michael Sturdivant
A real head-scratcher, J.Michael Sturdivant in pick 112 is miles ahead of his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick123 Rnd4 Kamari Wilson
The board had Kamari Wilson higher than the Round 4 slot, and the safety fell to them anyway. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick155 Rnd5 Riley Leonard
Riley Leonard in Round 5, Pick 17 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick169 Rnd5 Quinn Carroll
They paid up for Quinn Carroll at the 169th pick when waiting would have done the job. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick170 Rnd5 De'Corian Clark
A wide receiver of that caliber at slot 170 is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick171 Rnd5 Tez Johnson
Tez Johnson slid further than he should have, and the Round 5 slot is lovely value for the wide receiver. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick192 Rnd6 Nazir Stackhouse
They jumped the gun on Nazir Stackhouse, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It fills a real need, too.
Pick208 Rnd6 Damien Martinez
The board had cheaper options than Damien Martinez at pick 208, and it noticed. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
