You can hear the double-takes from here. The 49ers took Tommy Mellott at the 228th pick, roughly 168 spots before his name belonged.

They banked enough surplus on Sampson to cover a lot of smaller sins. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.

In the end it comes back to Walter Nolen, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
