Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B-
ValueC NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the 49ers.

Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the 49ers spent No. 254 on Trevor Etienne, a name most had 47 spots down the list.

They banked enough surplus on Hairston to cover a lot of smaller sins. The Hairston pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback and linebacker. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 Deone Walker
In pick 20 they get a disruptive interior force, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick51 Rnd2 Abdul Carter
They took Abdul Carter at par in the 51st overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick84 Rnd3 Colston Loveland
Taking Colston Loveland in the Round 3 slot is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick101 Rnd3 Tacario Davis
Tacario Davis in the 101st pick is fair value, right on his grade. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick120 Rnd4 Raheim Sanders
They liked Raheim Sanders enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 120. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick138 Rnd4 Maxwell Hairston
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Maxwell Hairston in Round 4, Pick 37 leaves quarterback and linebacker for later.
Pick194 Rnd6 Xavier Truss
Xavier Truss at the Round 6 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick224 Rnd7 Kyren Lacy
A clean, defensible pick in Round 7, Pick 10 with a little surplus value in Kyren Lacy. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick245 Rnd7 Alfred Collins
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Alfred Collins well ahead of where he belonged. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick247 Rnd7 Colbie Young
Colbie Young at the 247th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick254 Rnd7 Trevor Etienne
Trevor Etienne in the 254th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
