Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesA FutureC+
The 49ers let Etienne fall into their laps, and walked away with a B.

The board owed the 49ers one, and it paid up: Trevor Etienne, the No. 219 name on the board, sitting there at pick 255 like a gift left on the doorstep. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.

Reaching for Higgins left real value on the table behind him. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Mykel Williams
In pick 12 they get a problem off the edge. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick37 Rnd2 Nick Emmanwori
A tidy bit of business in the Round 2 slot, where Nick Emmanwori graded well above the range. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick54 Rnd2 Tre Harris
A reasonable price with a little left over, Tre Harris in the 54th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick67 Rnd3 Omarr Norman-Lott
Omarr Norman-Lott in No. 67 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick99 Rnd3 Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson at slot 99 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick112 Rnd4 Jared Wilson
Jared Wilson at the 112th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick123 Rnd4 Tory Horton
A quiet steal in pick No. 123: Tory Horton for less than the market said. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick139 Rnd4 Darius Alexander
They let Darius Alexander come to them and pounced at Round 4, Pick 38. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick148 Rnd5 Mello Dotson
Mello Dotson is a better player than the 148th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick160 Rnd5 Jay Higgins
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jay Higgins. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick189 Rnd6 Oronde Gadsden II
Oronde Gadsden II in pick No. 189 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick228 Rnd7 Jackson Hawes
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jackson Hawes well ahead of where he belonged. It fills a real need, too.
Pick232 Rnd7 Jonas Sanker
Jonas Sanker in the 232nd overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick255 Rnd7 Trevor Etienne
Trevor Etienne at pick 255 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
