Draft Grade — Bears
Overall C-
ValueC NeedB TradesF FutureA-
The Bears finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a C-.

The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Bears spent their marquee pick on J.J. McCarthy, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. It nets out a thoroughly average C-.

The cost of the McGregor reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Landing Coleman that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.

If J.J. McCarthy and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick Analysis
Pick6 Rnd1 J.J. McCarthy
In Round 1, Pick 6 they get their quarterback of the future, a steep price for the projection.
Pick9 Rnd1 Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In the 9th pick they get a building block for the line at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick20 Rnd1 Chop Robinson
A straight-up fair deal on Chop Robinson at No. 20, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick39 Rnd2 Tyler Nubin
They took Tyler Nubin at par in slot 39, which is nothing to complain about. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick47 Rnd2 Zach Frazier
Zach Frazier in the 47th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick70 Rnd3 Keon Coleman
They barely believed it either: Keon Coleman still on the board at the Round 3 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick75 Rnd3 Zak Zinter
A wild overpay on Zak Zinter in pick 75, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick111 Rnd4 Ben Sinnott
Ben Sinnott at pick No. 111 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick123 Rnd4 Braiden McGregor
Braiden McGregor at the Round 4 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick143 Rnd5 Anthony Gould
Anthony Gould at slot 143 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The roster fit checks out.
