The 49ers lost the trade table, and the D tells the story.

The 49ers went off the board in a big way for Eric Gregory, 55 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Leonard at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.

In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
