Draft Grade — Texans
Overall

FutureB-
The Texans bled value on every deal, hence the D. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Texans did exactly that with Benjamin Morrison in the Round 4 slot. The math is unkind, and the D follows.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. That is a running back worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
The veteran additions, Cooper Beebe chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not. Job largely done: running back settled and 8 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
In No. 20 they get a bell-cow for the offense, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick32
Rnd1
Luther Burden III
In pick No. 32 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick42
Rnd2
Nic Scourton
A conviction pick on Nic Scourton at Round 2, Pick 10 that the board grades a round light. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick55
Rnd2
Jahdae Barron
Jahdae Barron at the Round 2 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick61
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
Malaki Starks at slot 61 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick64
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
Fair-plus on Tyler Warren, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick68
Rnd3
Dylan Fairchild
They let Dylan Fairchild come to them and pounced at the Round 3 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick75
Rnd3
Omarion Hampton
A running back of that caliber at No. 75 is the definition of value, full stop. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick85
Rnd3
Deone Walker
Deone Walker at the 85th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick96
Rnd3
Jay Higgins
Jay Higgins in pick No. 96 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick121
Rnd4
Benjamin Morrison
Value said wait; Benjamin Morrison in pick 121 says they were not listening. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick133
Rnd4
Emery Jones Jr.
Emery Jones Jr. in Round 4, Pick 32 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick235
Rnd7
Jared Wilson
They robbed the room for Jared Wilson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick254
Rnd7
Kyron Drones
A big swing on Kyron Drones at slot 254, well ahead of any board in the building. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
