Draft Grade — Raiders
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
Quarterback settled, Mendoza in the fold, and a B- for the Raiders. The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Raiders spent their marquee pick on Fernando Mendoza, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. If Black pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
They paid sticker price for Fernando Mendoza in pick 1, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Pick36
Rnd2
Chris Johnson
Chris Johnson at pick No. 36 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick67
Rnd3
D'Angelo Ponds
They robbed the room for D'Angelo Ponds here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick102
Rnd4
Ted Hurst
Nice patience on Ted Hurst, who had no business lasting to No. 102. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick117
Rnd4
Bud Clark
Bud Clark at Round 4, Pick 17 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick134
Rnd4
Chris McClellan
A premium they did not need to pay, Chris McClellan a notch or two before his time. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick175
Rnd5
Caleb Douglas
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Caleb Douglas in slot 175. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick185
Rnd6
Taylen Green
Taylen Green in the 185th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick208
Rnd6
Kaelon Black
Kaelon Black in slot 208 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick219
Rnd7
VJ Payne
You do not let a safety like VJ Payne reach pick 219 and blink. They did not. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
