Mega3507 DRAFTING FOR THEBears

Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
A-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureA+
The Bears bet the future on McCarthy. The board says A-. Start where it matters. The Bears took J.J. McCarthy to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Ali.
Milton III has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The Bears clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
Bottom line, with J.J. McCarthy leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In pick No. 18 they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick23
Rnd1
Kool-Aid McKinstry
In the 23rd pick they get an island corner. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick35
Rnd2
Tyler Guyton
Tyler Guyton at Round 2, Pick 3 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick39
Rnd2
Javon Bullard
Javon Bullard at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick43
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
T'Vondre Sweat in slot 43 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick46
Rnd2
Roman Wilson
No drama and no debate, Roman Wilson went about where he belonged in No. 46. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick59
Rnd2
Zach Frazier
No edge and no loss on Zach Frazier in pick 59; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick65
Rnd3
Mike Sainristil
The board had cheaper options than Mike Sainristil at the 65th overall pick, and it noticed. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick75
Rnd3
Marshawn Kneeland
They paid sticker price for Marshawn Kneeland in slot 75, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick97
Rnd3
Gabriel Murphy
Good price on Gabriel Murphy in Round 3, Pick 34, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick109
Rnd4
Matt Goncalves
By-the-book stuff, Matt Goncalves at pick No. 109 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick115
Rnd4
Javon Baker
Taking Javon Baker in pick 115 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. It fills a real need, too.
Pick122
Rnd4
Blake Fisher
They did well to land Blake Fisher in No. 122, just ahead of his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick128
Rnd4
Theo Johnson
Fair-plus on Theo Johnson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick134
Rnd4
Kalen King
They took Kalen King at par in the 134th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick142
Rnd5
Mason McCormick
A straight-up fair deal on Mason McCormick at the Round 5 slot, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick177
Rnd6
Walter Rouse
Nice patience on Walter Rouse, who had no business lasting to Round 6, Pick 2. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick187
Rnd6
Joe Milton III
A reach on Joe Milton III in pick No. 187; the board had better options right there. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick197
Rnd6
Cornelius Johnson
Value with a capital V on Cornelius Johnson in the 197th pick, a genuine coup. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick224
Rnd7
Tylan Grable
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tylan Grable. The roster fit checks out.
Pick230
Rnd7
Michael Barrett
Michael Barrett in slot 230 is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick234
Rnd7
Jalen Sundell
Jalen Sundell in the 234th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick238
Rnd7
Rasheen Ali
Circle this one: Rasheen Ali at No. 238 is a fall that decides a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick240
Rnd7
Tayvion Robinson
Tayvion Robinson in pick 240 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
