Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall
D-
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureB-
The Panthers bled value on every deal, hence the D-. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Panthers reached some 57 spots for Kurtis Rourke, and value like that does not grow back. Hard to defend, and the D- reflects that.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through safety.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Smith-Wade. The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
JC Latham
In slot 25 they get a cornerstone up front. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick33
Rnd2
Ladd McConkey
Ladd McConkey in pick 33 is fair value, right on his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick42
Rnd2
Bralen Trice
A clean, defensible pick in the 42nd overall pick with a little surplus value in Bralen Trice. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick80
Rnd3
Johnny Wilson
Nothing to complain about; Johnny Wilson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick88
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
The board had Cooper Beebe higher than the Round 3 slot, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick101
Rnd4
Audric Estime
Audric Estime at No. 101 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick121
Rnd4
Darius Robinson
A straight-up fair deal on Darius Robinson at the Round 4 slot, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick137
Rnd5
Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray in slot 137 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick153
Rnd5
McCallan Castles
McCallan Castles at the 153rd pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick168
Rnd5
Delmar Glaze
No edge and no loss on Delmar Glaze in the 168th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
Pick172
Rnd5
Chau Smith-Wade
Value with a capital V on Chau Smith-Wade in No. 172, a genuine coup. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick180
Rnd6
Kurtis Rourke
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Kurtis Rourke well ahead of where he belonged. It fills a real need, too.
Pick203
Rnd6
Braiden McGregor
They did well to land Braiden McGregor in Round 6, Pick 28, just ahead of his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick222
Rnd7
BJ Mayes
BJ Mayes at pick 222 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
