If confidence were a draft strategy, the 49ers would have aced it. Princewill Umanmielen at Round 5, Pick 29 is 48 spots clear of where he belonged. It bottoms out at a F.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Getting Mendoza where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.

Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
