FutureC-
The Spann-Ford reach set the tone, and the Cardinals never recovered: F. The Cardinals clearly saw something nobody else did in Brevyn Spann-Ford, taking him 50 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. Little went right, and the F does not pretend otherwise.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Getting Oladapo where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
In short, a weekend the front office will want to forget in a hurry.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Marvin Harrison Jr.
In pick 4 they get a true top target at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick27
Rnd1
Jackson Powers-Johnson
In the 27th overall pick they get a blindside protector, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick35
Rnd2
Quinyon Mitchell
They did well to land Quinyon Mitchell in the 35th pick, just ahead of his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick67
Rnd3
Braden Fiske
They went early on Braden Fiske in No. 67, and the value did not follow. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick71
Rnd3
Roman Wilson
Roman Wilson in slot 71 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick72
Rnd3
Xavier Worthy
They barely believed it either: Xavier Worthy still on the board at the Round 3 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick74
Rnd3
Darius Robinson
This one needs a full-page explanation: Darius Robinson in Round 3, Pick 10, miles early. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick96
Rnd3
Malik Washington
Malik Washington at the Round 3 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick101
Rnd4
Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter in pick No. 101 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick105
Rnd4
Matt Goncalves
Matt Goncalves in slot 105 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick110
Rnd4
MarShawn Lloyd
A wild overpay on MarShawn Lloyd in No. 110, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick112
Rnd4
Jalyx Hunt
Jalyx Hunt at the 112th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
Pick115
Rnd4
Sione Vaki
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Sione Vaki. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick117
Rnd4
Jordan Travis
A real head-scratcher, Jordan Travis in the 117th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick126
Rnd4
Ben Sinnott
Value said wait; Ben Sinnott in the Round 4 slot says they were not listening. The roster fit checks out.
Pick137
Rnd5
Austin Booker
Austin Booker at No. 137 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick138
Rnd5
Logan Lee
A reach for Logan Lee in pick No. 138; a little patience would have been rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick142
Rnd5
Javon Foster
They read the board right and Javon Foster was the payoff at the 142nd overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick144
Rnd5
Cody Schrader
Cody Schrader in slot 144 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick168
Rnd5
Khristian Boyd
Good price on Khristian Boyd in Round 5, Pick 32, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick181
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. at pick 181 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It fills a real need, too.
Pick187
Rnd6
Eric Watts
They liked Eric Watts enough to skip the value, taking him in the 187th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick188
Rnd6
Gabe Hall
They reached a country mile for Gabe Hall at Round 6, Pick 13, and the board is aghast. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick189
Rnd6
Brevyn Spann-Ford
They left a pile of value on the table to take Brevyn Spann-Ford this early at slot 189. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick201
Rnd6
JD Bertrand
No drama and no debate, JD Bertrand went about where he belonged in pick 201. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick203
Rnd6
Kitan Oladapo
Circle this one: Kitan Oladapo at the Round 6 slot is a fall that decides a draft. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick211
Rnd6
Aki Ogunbiyi
Aki Ogunbiyi slid further than he should have, and the 211th pick is lovely value for the offensive lineman. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick220
Rnd6
Christian Jones
Christian Jones at No. 220 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick222
Rnd7
Jalen Green
By-the-book stuff, Jalen Green at pick No. 222 squarely in line with his ranking. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick224
Rnd7
J.J. Weaver
A swing that ignored the value entirely, J.J. Weaver well ahead of where he belonged. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick226
Rnd7
Trevor Keegan
Trevor Keegan in Round 7, Pick 6 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick234
Rnd7
Hunter Nourzad
They reached into another round for Hunter Nourzad, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick241
Rnd7
Nathaniel Watson
A big swing on Nathaniel Watson at slot 241, well ahead of any board in the building. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick243
Rnd7
Sam Hartman
Sam Hartman at No. 243 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
