FutureC+
Good, not great, for the Chargers: B. Nobody else had Da'Shawn Womack anywhere near No. 163. The Chargers did, by 49 spots, and that gap is the whole story. No fireworks, but a solid B.
Pieper at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
On the needs board they went 8 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Trevor Lauck
In the 26th overall pick they get a blindside protector at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick33
Rnd2
Tae Johnson
By-the-book stuff, Tae Johnson at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick57
Rnd2
Will Echoles
Will Echoles at the 57th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick65
Rnd3
David Stone
Somehow David Stone was still sitting there in pick No. 65, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick78
Rnd3
Devan Thompkins
Devan Thompkins at No. 78 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick80
Rnd3
Bear Alexander
Bear Alexander in Round 3, Pick 16 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick92
Rnd3
Kade Pieper
A offensive lineman of that caliber at pick No. 92 is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick94
Rnd3
Greg Johnson
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Greg Johnson in Round 3, Pick 30, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick100
Rnd3
Zeke Berry
Zeke Berry in the 100th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick101
Rnd3
Iapani Laloulu
They took Iapani Laloulu at par in slot 101, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick102
Rnd4
Evan Tengesdahl
A straight-up fair deal on Evan Tengesdahl at No. 102, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick113
Rnd4
Brandon Baker
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 4 slot with a little surplus value in Brandon Baker. It fills a real need, too.
Pick116
Rnd4
Taylor Wein
A wild overpay on Taylor Wein in pick 116, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick120
Rnd4
Shadre Hurst
Shadre Hurst in the 120th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Pick128
Rnd4
Melkart Abou Jaoude
This one needs a full-page explanation: Melkart Abou Jaoude in pick No. 128, miles early. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick129
Rnd4
Nico Iamaleava
A conviction pick on Nico Iamaleava at slot 129 that the board grades a round light. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick134
Rnd4
Tony Rojas
No drama and no debate, Tony Rojas went about where he belonged in the Round 4 slot. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick138
Rnd5
Jalen Mayo
They paid sticker price for Jalen Mayo in the 138th pick, and that is fine. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
Pick156
Rnd5
A.J. Harris
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on A.J. Harris. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick157
Rnd5
Jayden Jackson
Jayden Jackson slipping to Round 5, Pick 20 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick163
Rnd5
Da'Shawn Womack
They talked themselves into Da'Shawn Womack at No. 163, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick164
Rnd5
Justin Evans
They barely believed it either: Justin Evans still on the board at pick 164. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick167
Rnd5
John Curry
No edge and no loss on John Curry in slot 167; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick170
Rnd5
Jordan Marshall
Jordan Marshall in pick No. 170 is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick171
Rnd5
Mateen Ibirogba
Mateen Ibirogba at the Round 5 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick186
Rnd6
James Smith
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for James Smith. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick200
Rnd6
Isaiah Sategna III
Fair-plus on Isaiah Sategna III, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick212
Rnd6
Lawson Luckie
Lawson Luckie at pick 212 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick213
Rnd6
Eugene Wilson III
Eugene Wilson III at No. 213 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick221
Rnd7
LJ McCray
Value said wait; LJ McCray in Round 7, Pick 1 says they were not listening. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick231
Rnd7
Jake Guarnera
A straight-up fair deal on Jake Guarnera at pick No. 231, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick234
Rnd7
C.J. Fite
No drama and no debate, C.J. Fite went about where he belonged in Round 7, Pick 14. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick248
Rnd7
Elinneus Davis
Elinneus Davis in pick 248 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
