Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall

ValueB-

FutureB-
Nobody dealt better than the Chargers this weekend: B+. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Chargers spent pick No. 234 on Jaleel Johnson, a name most had 50 spots down the list. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B+.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Landing Pieper that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Will Echoles
In the 26th overall pick they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick33
Rnd2
Austin Siereveld
They went early on Austin Siereveld in pick 33, and the value did not follow. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick44
Rnd2
Kewan Lacy
Kewan Lacy in No. 44 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick65
Rnd3
Kade Pieper
Somehow Kade Pieper was still sitting there in slot 65, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick75
Rnd3
Devan Thompkins
A reasonable price with a little left over, Devan Thompkins in Round 3, Pick 11. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick81
Rnd3
Quincy Rhodes Jr.
A wild overpay on Quincy Rhodes Jr. in the Round 3 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick91
Rnd3
Samson Okunlola
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Samson Okunlola. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick102
Rnd4
Iapani Laloulu
They took Iapani Laloulu at par in the 102nd pick, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick118
Rnd4
Josh Hoover
Josh Hoover at Round 4, Pick 17 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
Pick134
Rnd4
Cooper Barkate
By-the-book stuff, Cooper Barkate at pick 134 squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick138
Rnd5
Jalen Mayo
No drama and no debate, Jalen Mayo went about where he belonged in pick No. 138. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
Pick149
Rnd5
Jayden Jackson
Jayden Jackson at the Round 5 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick162
Rnd5
Desmeal Leigh
No edge and no loss on Desmeal Leigh in slot 162; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
Pick165
Rnd5
John Curry
John Curry at the 165th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick221
Rnd7
Eli Finley
They paid sticker price for Eli Finley in Round 7, Pick 1, and that is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick234
Rnd7
Jaleel Johnson
A real head-scratcher, Jaleel Johnson in the Round 7 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
