Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesF FutureB-
The 49ers robbed the room for Horton. Final grade: D.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The 49ers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.

For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain. If Dippre pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.

The Horton pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and running back is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick29 Rnd1 Jonah Savaiinaea
In slot 29 they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick31 Rnd1 Kenneth Grant
Kenneth Grant at pick No. 31 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick59 Rnd2 Tate Ratledge
They paid sticker price for Tate Ratledge in Round 2, Pick 27, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick63 Rnd2 Ajani Cornelius
Nothing to complain about; Ajani Cornelius went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick95 Rnd3 Tory Horton
Taking Tory Horton in No. 95 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick123 Rnd4 Malachi Moore
Malachi Moore at pick 123 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick127 Rnd4 Tyler Warren
They took Tyler Warren at par in the 127th pick, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick159 Rnd5 Tommi Hill
Steal is underselling it; Tommi Hill at the 159th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick189 Rnd6 Zy Alexander
A straight-up fair deal on Zy Alexander at pick No. 189, value and slot in agreement. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick191 Rnd6 Alfred Collins
They went early on Alfred Collins in the Round 6 slot, and the value did not follow. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick223 Rnd7 CJ Dippre
They liked CJ Dippre enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 223. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
