FutureB
The Vikings bet the future on McCarthy. The board says B+. The search is over. The Vikings handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development. Call it a sensible B+, earned the boring way.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They banked enough surplus on Pritchett to cover a lot of smaller sins. The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Reaching for Glaze left real value on the table behind him.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Byron Murphy II
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the defensive front. A real need, handled.
Pick27
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In pick No. 27 they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick46
Rnd2
Darius Robinson
Darius Robinson in the 46th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick53
Rnd2
Cooper Beebe
A clean, defensible pick in pick 53 with a little surplus value in Cooper Beebe. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick91
Rnd3
Trey Benson
Good price on Trey Benson in No. 91, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick108
Rnd4
Mekhi Wingo
By-the-book stuff, Mekhi Wingo at the 108th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick120
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Johnny Wilson. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick129
Rnd4
Sataoa Laumea
A straight-up fair deal on Sataoa Laumea at Round 4, Pick 29, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick138
Rnd5
Roger Rosengarten
Roger Rosengarten at the Round 5 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick157
Rnd5
Mason McCormick
They let Mason McCormick come to them and pounced at the 157th pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick162
Rnd5
Nehemiah Pritchett
Nehemiah Pritchett in pick No. 162 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick167
Rnd5
Walter Rouse
Walter Rouse in pick 167 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick177
Rnd6
Delmar Glaze
Delmar Glaze at slot 177 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick230
Rnd7
JD Bertrand
Quietly one of the better values of the day, JD Bertrand at Round 7, Pick 10. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
