Williams is the Bears' new face under center. Grade: D. The trade table was where it all came apart. The Bears shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. The process wobbled, and the D is where it lands.
Everything downstream of Caleb Williams depends on Caleb Williams, and the building knows it. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They banked enough surplus on Rice to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
In pick No. 1 they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
Pick11
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick43
Rnd2
Jonah Elliss
No edge and no loss on Jonah Elliss in No. 43; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick74
Rnd3
Kalen King
They will replay Kalen King at the 74th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick75
Rnd3
Christian Haynes
Christian Haynes at the 75th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick110
Rnd4
Brenden Rice
Somehow Brenden Rice was still sitting there in pick 110, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick143
Rnd5
Malik Mustapha
Malik Mustapha at the Round 5 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick146
Rnd5
Dallin Holker
A reasonable price with a little left over, Dallin Holker in slot 146. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick185
Rnd6
Michael Barrett
Good price on Michael Barrett in Round 6, Pick 10, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
