Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
B+
ValueC
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureA+
McCarthy is the plan now, and the Bears grade out a B+. The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Bears spent their marquee pick on J.J. McCarthy, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. No fireworks, but a solid B+.
The Capehart pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through running back.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In No. 8 they get a matchup problem out wide. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick20
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In the 20th pick they get their quarterback of the future, a steep price for the projection. A real need, handled.
Pick75
Rnd3
Gabriel Murphy
Gabriel Murphy in the 75th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick84
Rnd3
Josh Newton
Josh Newton in slot 84 is fair value, right on his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick104
Rnd4
Mohamed Kamara
Mohamed Kamara at pick No. 104 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick111
Rnd4
Drake Nugent
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Drake Nugent. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick121
Rnd4
Isaiah Adams
They paid sticker price for Isaiah Adams in Round 4, Pick 21, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick123
Rnd4
Justin Eboigbe
A straight-up fair deal on Justin Eboigbe at the Round 4 slot, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick134
Rnd4
Logan Lee
Logan Lee at No. 134 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick143
Rnd5
LaDarius Henderson
LaDarius Henderson in Round 5, Pick 7 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The roster fit checks out.
Pick164
Rnd5
Keith Randolph Jr.
They did well to land Keith Randolph Jr. in the Round 5 slot, just ahead of his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick214
Rnd6
Trevor Keegan
A big swing on Trevor Keegan at the 214th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick238
Rnd7
DeMonte Capehart
A wild overpay on DeMonte Capehart in pick 238, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick248
Rnd7
Joshua Cephus
They liked Joshua Cephus enough to skip the value, taking him in the 248th overall pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
