FutureA
The Bears left with their quarterback, and a B+ to match. After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Bears committed. Drake Maye is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. It nets out to a B+, which feels about right.
That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Stover pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at running back and linebacker. They banked enough surplus on Thomas Jr. to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
Pick9
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
By-the-book stuff, Rome Odunze at pick No. 9 squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick21
Rnd1
Terrion Arnold
In slot 21 they get a ballhawk on the outside at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick34
Rnd2
Brian Thomas Jr.
They read the board right and Brian Thomas Jr. was the payoff at the 34th pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick44
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
No edge and no loss on Xavier Legette in the 44th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
Pick75
Rnd3
Mekhi Wingo
Mekhi Wingo in pick 75 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick103
Rnd4
Dominick Puni
They paid sticker price for Dominick Puni in the Round 4 slot, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick110
Rnd4
Matt Goncalves
A tidy little value on Matt Goncalves in No. 110, a step better than break-even. The roster fit checks out.
Pick125
Rnd4
Cade Stover
Of all the spots to shop, they chose TE-EDGE. Cade Stover in slot 125 leaves running back and linebacker for later.
Pick140
Rnd5
Shemar Turner
They took Shemar Turner at par in pick 140, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick146
Rnd5
Javion Cohen
Good price on Javion Cohen in the 146th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick186
Rnd6
Christian Jones
Nothing to complain about; Christian Jones went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick232
Rnd7
Akheem Mesidor
Akheem Mesidor at Round 7, Pick 12 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
