Draft Grade — Bengals

FutureA+
The Bengals lost the trade table, and the D tells the story. The tape said wait; the Bengals did not. Trey Moore went at slot 130, a good 120 picks before the board was ready. Put together, it is a D.
They banked enough surplus on Carter to cover a lot of smaller sins. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick Analysis
Pick16
Rnd1
Mykel Williams
In the 16th pick they get juice off the edge. More want than need.
Pick34
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
The board had Nick Emmanwori higher than No. 34, and the safety fell to them anyway. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick40
Rnd2
Walter Nolen
Walter Nolen at pick 40 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick47
Rnd2
Omarion Hampton
Omarion Hampton in the 47th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick66
Rnd3
Jihaad Campbell
A linebacker of that caliber at Round 3, Pick 2 is the definition of value, full stop. The roster fit checks out.
Pick73
Rnd3
Tyler Warren
The board fumbled Tyler Warren all the way to pick No. 73, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick77
Rnd3
Logan Brown
Logan Brown at the Round 3 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick81
Rnd3
Kamari Ramsey
They robbed the room for Kamari Ramsey here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick96
Rnd3
Earnest Greene III
They talked themselves into Earnest Greene III at the 96th overall pick, and the board did not agree. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick103
Rnd4
Jaeden Roberts
Jaeden Roberts in pick 103 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick113
Rnd4
Emery Jones Jr.
They reached a country mile for Emery Jones Jr. at Round 4, Pick 12, and the board is aghast. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick117
Rnd4
Miles Frazier
A real head-scratcher, Miles Frazier in pick No. 117 is miles ahead of his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick118
Rnd4
DJ Campbell
A wild overpay on DJ Campbell in the 118th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick121
Rnd4
Jonah Monheim
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jonah Monheim. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick125
Rnd4
TreVeyon Henderson
They barely believed it either: TreVeyon Henderson still on the board at the 125th overall pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick126
Rnd4
Sonny Styles
No drama and no debate, Sonny Styles went about where he belonged in the 126th pick. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick128
Rnd4
Evan Stewart
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Evan Stewart in pick No. 128, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick129
Rnd4
Que Robinson
Que Robinson at No. 129 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick130
Rnd4
Trey Moore
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Trey Moore well ahead of where he belonged. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick132
Rnd4
Domani Jackson
A reasonable price with a little left over, Domani Jackson in Round 4, Pick 31. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick134
Rnd4
Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor at pick 134 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick140
Rnd5
Shemar Turner
A big swing on Shemar Turner at the Round 5 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick142
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They reached into another round for Dont'e Thornton Jr., and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick149
Rnd5
Barrett Carter
They will replay Barrett Carter at Round 5, Pick 12 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick151
Rnd5
Cobee Bryant
Cobee Bryant in slot 151 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick152
Rnd5
Nicholas Singleton
Nicholas Singleton in the 152nd overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick156
Rnd5
Smael Mondon Jr.
Somehow Smael Mondon Jr. was still sitting there in the Round 5 slot, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick158
Rnd5
Kyren Lacy
Steal is underselling it; Kyren Lacy at the 158th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick161
Rnd5
Anthony Belton
Anthony Belton at No. 161 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick187
Rnd6
Tim Smith
They left a pile of value on the table to take Tim Smith this early at pick 187. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick203
Rnd6
Graham Mertz
This one needs a full-page explanation: Graham Mertz in slot 203, miles early. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick219
Rnd7
Jake Briningstool
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jake Briningstool in the 219th pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick222
Rnd7
Julian Fleming
Value said wait; Julian Fleming in No. 222 says they were not listening. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick253
Rnd7
Denver Harris
Denver Harris at pick 253 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
