FutureB-
Nobody dealt better than the Bengals this weekend: B+. They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Hayden Hatten, 47 picks early at the 254th overall pick. It nets out to a B+, which feels about right.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. That Trice pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
The Bengals indulged a want in Smith while a need in interior defensive lineman, linebacker and other spots stayed open. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick32
Rnd1
Adonai Mitchell
In the Round 1 slot they get a difference-maker at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick49
Rnd2
Bralen Trice
They will replay Bralen Trice at pick 49 for years; that is how good the value is. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick64
Rnd2
Javon Bullard
No drama and no debate, Javon Bullard went about where he belonged in Round 2, Pick 32. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick80
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
They paid sticker price for Cooper Beebe in No. 80, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick95
Rnd3
Maason Smith
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went DT-EDGE with Maason Smith while clear needs at interior defensive lineman, linebacker and other spots sat open.
Pick115
Rnd4
Javon Foster
Javon Foster at pick No. 115 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick132
Rnd4
Cam Hart
By-the-book stuff, Cam Hart at the 132nd pick squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick151
Rnd5
Jaylen Wright
They took Jaylen Wright at par in slot 151, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Pick173
Rnd5
AJ Barner
A premium they did not need to pay, AJ Barner a notch or two before his time. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick196
Rnd6
Christian Jones
Christian Jones in No. 196 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The roster fit checks out.
Pick238
Rnd7
Dwight McGlothern
Dwight McGlothern in pick No. 238 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick254
Rnd7
Hayden Hatten
Hayden Hatten at the 254th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
