Nothing loud, just a tidy B for the Bengals. The war room fell hard for Hayden Hatten, and it showed at the 244th overall pick: 92 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas.
That Jones pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
Cornerback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
JC Latham
In pick 18 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A real need, handled.
Pick50
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
T'Vondre Sweat at the Round 2 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick89
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
A slide stopped in pick No. 89, with Cooper Beebe worth more than the price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick116
Rnd4
Malik Washington
They paid sticker price for Malik Washington in the 116th pick, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick127
Rnd4
Ben Sinnott
This one needs a full-page explanation: Ben Sinnott in Round 4, Pick 27, miles early. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick148
Rnd5
Jaylen Wright
The board had cheaper options than Jaylen Wright at slot 148, and it noticed. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick160
Rnd5
Jarrian Jones
Jarrian Jones at the 160th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick170
Rnd5
Edefuan Ulofoshio
They read the board right and Edefuan Ulofoshio was the payoff at Round 5, Pick 34. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick171
Rnd5
Kitan Oladapo
By-the-book stuff, Kitan Oladapo at the Round 5 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick175
Rnd5
Grayson Murphy
Grayson Murphy at the 175th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick196
Rnd6
Christian Jones
Christian Jones in pick No. 196 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick204
Rnd6
Matthew Jones
They reached into another round for Matthew Jones, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick235
Rnd7
Dwight McGlothern
A wild overpay on Dwight McGlothern in pick 235, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick244
Rnd7
Hayden Hatten
Hayden Hatten in No. 244 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick252
Rnd7
Carson Steele
A big swing on Carson Steele at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. A need, and now a little less of one.
