Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall
D+
ValueB+
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB-
The Commanders let Hampton fall and pounced. Final grade: D+. The Commanders lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. Hard to defend, and the D+ reflects that.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. The Hampton steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The Watson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
A slide stopped in the 31st pick, with Tyler Warren worth more than the price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick56
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
You do not let a safety like Malaki Starks reach the 56th overall pick and blink. They did not. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick61
Rnd2
Omarion Hampton
Omarion Hampton in No. 61 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick101
Rnd3
Dylan Fairchild
No edge and no loss on Dylan Fairchild in pick No. 101; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick104
Rnd4
David Walker
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on David Walker. It fills a real need, too.
Pick109
Rnd4
Darius Alexander
Darius Alexander slipping to slot 109 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick128
Rnd4
Jaylin Lane
They did well to land Jaylin Lane in Round 4, Pick 26, just ahead of his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick133
Rnd4
Anthony Belton
They robbed the room for Anthony Belton here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick190
Rnd6
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in pick No. 190 lands just on the right side of the ledger. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick216
Rnd6
Jason Marshall Jr.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jason Marshall Jr. in the 216th overall pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick226
Rnd7
Desmond Watson
A reach on Desmond Watson in No. 226; the board had better options right there. The roster fit checks out.
Pick233
Rnd7
R.J. Mickens
R.J. Mickens at the Round 7 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick240
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
Isaac TeSlaa at pick 240 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick245
Rnd7
Jermari Harris
Jermari Harris at the 245th pick is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
