FutureA+
Nobody dealt better than the Bears this weekend: A-. The trade table was a mismatch, and the Bears were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A-.
The cost of the Van Pran reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The Laumea pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 8 of 8 of the wish list covered. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Olumuyiwa Fashanu and all.
Pick Analysis
Pick15
Rnd1
Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In pick 15 they get a building block for the line. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick20
Rnd1
Keon Coleman
In slot 20 they get a true top target at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick21
Rnd1
Byron Murphy II
In the 21st pick they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick31
Rnd1
Kamren Kinchens
They paid sticker price for Kamren Kinchens in No. 31, and that is fine. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick35
Rnd2
Troy Fautanu
A reasonable price with a little left over, Troy Fautanu in the Round 2 slot. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick55
Rnd2
Cooper Beebe
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Cooper Beebe. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick58
Rnd2
Sedrick Van Pran
A big swing on Sedrick Van Pran at the 58th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. The roster fit checks out.
Pick69
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice in Round 3, Pick 5 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick75
Rnd3
Malachi Corley
They took Malachi Corley at par in pick No. 75, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick82
Rnd3
Roman Wilson
By-the-book stuff, Roman Wilson at the 82nd pick squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick84
Rnd3
Gabriel Murphy
No edge and no loss on Gabriel Murphy in slot 84; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick89
Rnd3
Tykee Smith
No drama and no debate, Tykee Smith went about where he belonged in the 89th overall pick. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick94
Rnd3
Leonard Taylor III
They reached into another round for Leonard Taylor III, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick111
Rnd4
Khyree Jackson
Khyree Jackson at pick 111 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick123
Rnd4
Tommy Eichenberg
Tommy Eichenberg at No. 123 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Pick132
Rnd4
Sataoa Laumea
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Sataoa Laumea at Round 4, Pick 32 is the proof. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick135
Rnd4
Cole Bishop
Nothing to complain about; Cole Bishop went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick139
Rnd5
Ben Sinnott
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ben Sinnott. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick143
Rnd5
Braelon Allen
They jumped the gun on Braelon Allen, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick205
Rnd6
Sam Hartman
A reach for Sam Hartman in pick No. 205; a little patience would have been rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick215
Rnd6
Jared Wiley
Jared Wiley at the 215th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
