Draft Grade — Chargers

FutureC
The Chargers won the night they stopped Echoles from sliding. Grade: B. You could see the war room lean forward. Will Echoles at the 55th pick is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. The bottom line is a respectable B.
Strong has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want. It is not that McClain is a bad player; it is that the Chargers had louder needs to answer first.
The Chargers clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
KJ Bolden
In Round 1, Pick 22 they get a downhill hitter at safety at a price that makes it sweeter. Need was not the driver here.
Pick55
Rnd2
Will Echoles
Will Echoles at No. 55 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick86
Rnd3
Samson Okunlola
Samson Okunlola in slot 86 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It fills a real need, too.
Pick100
Rnd3
Kade Pieper
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Kade Pieper at the 100th overall pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick101
Rnd4
Jayden Maiava
Jayden Maiava in pick No. 101 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick123
Rnd4
Jaylen McClain
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Jaylen McClain in pick 123 leaves running back for later.
Pick141
Rnd5
Mateen Ibirogba
A clean, defensible pick in the 141st pick with a little surplus value in Mateen Ibirogba. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick142
Rnd5
Walker Lyons
Fair-plus on Walker Lyons, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick162
Rnd5
Jermaine Mathews Jr.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jermaine Mathews Jr. in Round 5, Pick 24. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick182
Rnd6
Jake Guarnera
Jake Guarnera at slot 182 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. The roster fit checks out.
Pick202
Rnd6
Christian Alliegro
A reasonable price with a little left over, Christian Alliegro in pick 202. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick238
Rnd7
D'Antre Robinson
D'Antre Robinson at the 238th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick254
Rnd7
Xavier Scott
A conviction pick on Xavier Scott at the Round 7 slot that the board grades a round light. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick257
Rnd7
Ian Strong
A wild overpay on Ian Strong in pick No. 257, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
