Daniels is the plan now, and the 49ers grade out a D-. The tape said wait; the 49ers did not. Tip Reiman went at the Round 5 slot, a good 31 picks before the board was ready. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.
The whole projection now runs through Jayden Daniels; hit there and everything else looks smarter. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They will answer for taking cornerback early while interior defensive lineman went begging.
The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Jayden Daniels
In pick 3 they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick4
Rnd1
Malik Nabers
In the Round 1 slot they get a difference-maker at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick17
Rnd1
Troy Fautanu
In slot 17 they get a blindside protector. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick23
Rnd1
Cooper DeJean
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cooper DeJean. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick33
Rnd2
Darius Robinson
Darius Robinson in the 33rd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick34
Rnd2
Zach Frazier
Zach Frazier in Round 2, Pick 2 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick39
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette in Round 2, Pick 7 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick63
Rnd2
Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe at slot 63 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick66
Rnd3
Kingsley Suamataia
They took Kingsley Suamataia at par in pick No. 66, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick94
Rnd3
DJ James
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman still to address, they spent the 94th overall pick on DJ James, a cornerback they were not short of.
Pick103
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
A conviction pick on Cedric Gray at the 103rd pick that the board grades a round light. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick108
Rnd4
Braelon Allen
They paid sticker price for Braelon Allen in pick 108, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick124
Rnd4
Jarrian Jones
A curious use of the Round 4 slot. Interior defensive lineman needed the pick; a cornerback in Jarrian Jones did not.
Pick129
Rnd4
Kitan Oladapo
They went early on Kitan Oladapo in No. 129, and the value did not follow. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick132
Rnd4
Trevin Wallace
They left a pile of value on the table to take Trevin Wallace this early at the 132nd pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick138
Rnd5
Tip Reiman
Tip Reiman at pick 138 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The roster fit checks out.
Pick180
Rnd6
Sione Vaki
No drama and no debate, Sione Vaki went about where he belonged in the 180th overall pick. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick189
Rnd6
Dwight McGlothern
A reasonable price with a little left over, Dwight McGlothern in slot 189. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
