FutureD
The Patriots finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a D-. The Patriots lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.
They have staked the next five years on Drake Maye, which is the only story that really matters here. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In pick 4 they get a franchise quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick21
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In pick No. 21 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
Amarius Mims
By-the-book stuff, Amarius Mims at No. 36 squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick68
Rnd3
Mekhi Wingo
A tidy little value on Mekhi Wingo in the Round 3 slot, a step better than break-even. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick104
Rnd4
Kiran Amegadjie
Nothing to complain about; Kiran Amegadjie went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
