Draft Grade — Bills
Overall
B+
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureB
A masterclass at the trade table lands the Bills a B+. If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Bills, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend. They moved the roster forward and banked a B+ for it.
They will need Tagovailoa to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Spending an early pick on DT-EDGE with interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
Jones falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick40
Rnd2
Tyler Nubin
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tyler Nubin. The roster fit checks out.
Pick65
Rnd3
Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette at the 65th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick99
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
By-the-book stuff, Christian Mahogany at No. 99 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick101
Rnd4
Maason Smith
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots still to address, they spent Round 4, Pick 1 on Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE they were not short of.
Pick102
Rnd4
Matt Goncalves
A reach for Matt Goncalves in the Round 4 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick103
Rnd4
Audric Estime
They took Audric Estime at par in slot 103, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick129
Rnd4
Josh Newton
Good price on Josh Newton in pick 129, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick159
Rnd5
Sione Vaki
Sione Vaki in the 159th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It fills a real need, too.
Pick162
Rnd5
Ty'Ron Hopper
Ty'Ron Hopper at the 162nd overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick198
Rnd6
Nick Gargiulo
No edge and no loss on Nick Gargiulo in slot 198; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick202
Rnd6
Daijun Edwards
Daijun Edwards in the Round 6 slot is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick206
Rnd6
Elijah Jones
Elijah Jones in pick 206 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick246
Rnd7
Taulia Tagovailoa
A real head-scratcher, Taulia Tagovailoa in Round 7, Pick 26 is miles ahead of his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
