The Bills let Pearsall fall into their laps, and walked away with a D. There is reaching, and then there is Gabe Hall at the 146th overall pick. The Bills jumped the board by 35 and dared it to prove them wrong. It grades a D, and the process earned it.
That Pearsall pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
A whole weekend of picks and safety is somehow still a want. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Chop Robinson
In the Round 1 slot they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. A real need, handled.
Pick20
Rnd1
Xavier Worthy
In the 20th pick they get a weapon on the perimeter, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick33
Rnd2
Jonah Elliss
A reach for Jonah Elliss in the 33rd overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick50
Rnd2
Brian Thomas Jr.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Brian Thomas Jr. this early at No. 50. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick54
Rnd2
Adonai Mitchell
They reached into another round for Adonai Mitchell, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick79
Rnd3
Tyleik Williams
Tyleik Williams at the Round 3 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick99
Rnd3
Smael Mondon Jr.
They took Smael Mondon Jr. at par in the 99th pick, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick118
Rnd4
Troy Fautanu
Troy Fautanu in No. 118 is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick120
Rnd4
Joe Milton III
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Joe Milton III. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick146
Rnd5
Gabe Hall
Gabe Hall at slot 146 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick155
Rnd5
Max Melton
Max Melton in Round 5, Pick 19 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick191
Rnd6
Ricky Pearsall
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Ricky Pearsall in pick No. 191, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick196
Rnd6
Jack Nelson
You do not let an offensive lineman like Jack Nelson reach the 196th pick and blink. They did not. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick204
Rnd6
Rasheen Ali
They talked themselves into Rasheen Ali at Round 6, Pick 29, and the board did not agree. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
