Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall C+
ValueC+ NeedB- TradesB- FutureB-
The Steelers did enough to get by: C+.

Of all the ways to open, the Steelers chose the head-scratcher, spending Round 2, Pick 19 on Sedrick Van Pran with quarterback, safety and other spots still wide open. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.

For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Van Pran reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. The roster is better shaped than it was, with interior defensive lineman chief among the fixes.

The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.

If Amarius Mims and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 Amarius Mims
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the offensive line. Need was not the driver here.
Pick51 Rnd2 Sedrick Van Pran
A curious use of Round 2, Pick 19. Quarterback, safety and other spots needed the pick; an offensive lineman in Sedrick Van Pran did not.
Pick84 Rnd3 Michael Hall Jr.
A straight-up fair deal on Michael Hall Jr. at slot 84, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick98 Rnd3 Jalen McMillan
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jalen McMillan. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick119 Rnd4 Johnny Wilson
By-the-book stuff, Johnny Wilson at the 119th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick178 Rnd6 Ty'Ron Hopper
Ty'Ron Hopper at pick 178 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick195 Rnd6 Johnny Dixon
Good price on Johnny Dixon in the 195th pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
