Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall A-
ValueB- NeedB- TradesA+ FutureA+
Trotter Jr. should have been long gone. The Steelers pounced, and earned a A-.

The trade table was a mismatch, and the Steelers were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. Add it all up and it grades out a clean A-.

That is a linebacker worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The Steelers indulged a want in Powers-Johnson while a need in interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots stayed open. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.

The cost of the Jackson reach is exactly the players who went right after him.

Bottom line, with Kiran Amegadjie leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.

Pick Analysis
Pick53 Rnd2 Kiran Amegadjie
They took Kiran Amegadjie at par in the 53rd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick54 Rnd2 Jackson Powers-Johnson
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went offensive lineman with Jackson Powers-Johnson while clear needs at interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots sat open.
Pick85 Rnd3 Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at pick 85 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick89 Rnd3 Maason Smith
A curious use of the Round 3 slot. Interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots needed the pick; a DT-EDGE in Maason Smith did not.
Pick91 Rnd3 Payton Wilson
Payton Wilson at slot 91 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick103 Rnd4 Khyree Jackson
They paid a round early for Khyree Jackson in Round 4, Pick 3, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick110 Rnd4 Kris Abrams-Draine
Kris Abrams-Draine at the Round 4 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick112 Rnd4 Cooper Beebe
A want over a need in Round 4, Pick 12: Cooper Beebe adds an offensive lineman while interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick120 Rnd4 Javon Foster
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending slot 120 on Javon Foster with interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots unsolved.
Pick124 Rnd4 Jahdae Barron
Jahdae Barron in pick 124 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick159 Rnd5 Jordan Travis
A tidy bit of business in the 159th overall pick, where Jordan Travis graded well above the range. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick176 Rnd6 Josh Proctor
Josh Proctor at pick No. 176 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick186 Rnd6 Jaylen Harrell
Jaylen Harrell in No. 186 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick199 Rnd6 Bru McCoy
Bru McCoy slipping to the 199th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick205 Rnd6 Curtis Jacobs
Curtis Jacobs at pick 205 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The roster fit checks out.
Pick242 Rnd7 Fentrell Cypress II
Fentrell Cypress II is a better player than pick No. 242 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick243 Rnd7 Xavier Restrepo
Xavier Restrepo at the 243rd overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
